Size: 74 inches
Every Whiskeyjack Paddle is individually handcrafted. Like a snowflake, no two are exactly the same. Each one is unique and special in its own way - and each has the classic style and innovative design that defines Whiskeyjack Paddles.
All Whiskeyjack stand up paddles are individually handcrafted from the finest select-grain, red and white cedar available. These beautiful and unique paddles combine old world craftsmanship with modern laminated design.
The ergonomically designed grips are incredibly comfortable and greatly reduce hand fatigue. We painstakingly mold each grip so that they fit perfectly into the palm of your hand.
Our fiberglass reinforced blades are designed to glide through the water without flutter or vibration. Our blades are strong but have just enough flexibility to reduce strain on the joints.
The shafts are constructed of five strips of laminated cedar and are spokeshaved by hand into a smooth, oval shape -perpendicluar to the blade. Our wooden shafts provide wonderful flex which acts as a natural shock absorber during long days of hard paddling.
These beautiful stand up paddles are built with pride and are among the nicest paddles you will ever hold.
Uno, dos, tres, OCHO.
Almost all Stand Up Surf Paddles on the market today have mega-wide blades for powerful strokes. These blades are great in certain situations but some times Less is More.
The Ocho features an 8 inch wide blade which is easy to stroke and offers elegant power - with far less flutter.
Outside of the surf zone, The Ocho is an excellent distance paddle where a high stroke cadence rate is preferred for cruising. The blade slices through the water with ease and requires much less energy to use than our wider blade models.
Like all Whiskeyjack stand up paddles, The Ocho is a light, super-tough stand up paddle. This paddle is designed for pure performance with a 5 strip aspen and walnut laminated shaft and fiberglass re-enforced blade.

I've been using one of the Whiskeyjack Ocho paddles since summer 2011. We were super excited to know that Whiskeyjack would be imported into the UK from Whitefish, Montana in the States, where they are all made. The paddles look fantastic on Whiskeyjack's website - They have a great classic warm wood grain look & each is paddle is totally unique. Much more appealing to a recreational paddler like me than a generic looking piece of black carbon.
On getting the first paddles into the shop we were a little surprised at the finish on them. The glass fibre on the blade had not been hot coated & polished, so the weave of the glass cloth was still visible in the surface texture. The profile of the edge of the blade was also quite square. Neither of these bother me particularly as I bought the paddle to use - not to hang on the wall, but it is worth mentioning. As part of the maintenance of a wooden paddle, I'll eventually sand out any knocks to the edge of the blade & re-varnish. This will put the round profile on the edge & finish the blade to the high gloss I would expect. The level of craftsmanship that has obviously gone into making these paddles is high, but just let down a bit by the finishing touches. As time has gone on & successive batches have come into the UK the finish has improved.
In use the paddle is excellent - super functional. Its light (under a kilo), quite stiff, but with a responsive wood feel. The small blade shape suits my higher cadence & lets me hustle a board along nicely - good for keeping up momentum into wind or tide. There is minimal leafing & the oval shaft provides good control of the blade orientation. Its just a lovely thing to own & it makes me smile when I paddle with it.
The handle at the top fits well in your hand but they are all slightly different, so worth having a hold of a few in the shop. I keep my paddle in a Dakine paddle bag (my Ocho didn't fit an X-Paddle bag, as the handles are just a tad too wide to get in & out easily). The traditional varnish smells great every time I unzip it & it's a reminder that you're using something unique, handmade by another person. Whiskeyjack produce a range of SUP, Kayak & Canoe paddles to suit all requirements, from the traditional to high tech carbon shaft models. We hold most models in stock at www.24-7Boardsports.com, but do call us first to check we have the right length paddle for you.
