You get lots of grip on the wax or pads from the stick rubber soles and there is plenty of tactile feed back left, which is great. The downside to a thin sole is that you can feel the shingle a bit more through them, but it's much more comfortable than bare feet in the summer.
The construction is like a glued and blindstitched neoprene sock that has been dipped in rubber. This makes the boot really soft and comfortable to wear. The lining is a warm thermally insulating material inside the ankle and over the top of your foot. Under your foot they have used a thinner lining, so you keep as much board feel as possible. The separate toe on the Madisson helps to keep the boot in place on your foot and prevents it from rolling over. It is a bit colder on your big toe than a round toe boot, but thats the price of performance (and looking cool). Split toe boots are a bit of a love or hate thing and if you can come to the shop to try some on, it's well worth doing so. If you don't dig the separate toe, the Mistral is a similar construction with a traditional round toe.
The rubber on the soles of the Atans is quite soft. If you walk about lots in your wetsuit boots these will wear out fairly quickly and you'd be better off with a cheaper more hard wearing pair. Look after them and lay off hiking about in them, they will last for ages. A good slosh with some wetsuit shampoo, then drying them thoroughly, will keep them smelling sweet as well.

Madisson split toe boot
Ive had these for a season or two & they are a great spring/autumn boot. The split toe design stops the boot twisting around on your foot. The supple rubber gives you the best board feel available in a warm boot. Sweet for strapless surfing. Atan boots properly stick to the transparent Versa Traction deck grip. Give the shop a call & they can hook you up with some versatraction.
The downside of this split toe design is you lose the 'collective warmth' for your big toe & it tends to get cold before the rest of your foot. The fit of these around your toes is a bit 'marmite' - some people love em & some people hate em, guess it depends on the shape of your foot. If your mail ordering boots, perhaps go for the Mistral 4mm as it fits more people.
